External Tool Connection

Canvas has the capability to integrate with external tools, elevating the student learning journey and facilitating convenient access to publisher resources. These tools are integrated using an LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) connection. This link fosters seamless communication between Canvas and the external tool, ensuring a frictionless transition for students to access the tool.

The instructional design team at the University of Redlands has already incorporated numerous LTI connections into Canvas. The following list presents the existing connections, with the acknowledgment that some connections are exclusively accessible within specific schools.

If your department does not see a connection above, please use the External Tool Connection Request Form.  Kindly request the Instructional Design team to investigate this connection. Upon receiving the form, the team will assess the connection request, ensuring it upholds the University's digital security standards, and subsequently initiate the implementation process. Throughout this period, the Instructional Design team might need to contact the requester for supplementary details.

Time line of external tool request. Starting with request going to review and ending with implimentation

In order to maintain Canvas' stability, the installation of external tools will occur during periods of minimal traffic. These timeframes are as follows:

  • From the beginning of May Term until the week preceding Fall Term
  • From the week following Fall CAS finals until the Wednesday before Spring Term

Important Note: LTI connections are established by third-party external providers. Consequently, the Instructional Design team is unable to troubleshoot issues beyond the creation of the connection. Moreover, for the safety of both students and the university, LTI requests from external providers will only be considered if they come directly from sponsoring faculty members.
