Recommended Configurations

PC Laptops or Desktops

  • Processor: Intel i5, or i7 Processors or newer (i3 Processors not recommended for multitasking)
  • Memory 8GB or more (16GB if taking GIS of Advanced Photo or video Classes)
  • Hard Drive: 256GB storage or Larger (Also, recommended External USB storage drive for Backups, or access to online Backup Drives like Google Drive or Dropbox). One Drive 1TB storage is provided free to students.
  • Screen size is to the discretion of the students.
  • Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit with Latest updates (Minimum Windows 8.1)
  • Microsoft Office 365 is Provided Free to students to install (do not need to purchase separately)
  • Recommended: Purchasing own Anti-Virus program. The University of Redlands no longer provides or requires an AV on computers; however, an AV program is essential for online security.
  • Optional: Dell, HP, Lenovo (Provide 1 year manufacturer warranty, or purchase extra warranty).

Apple Laptops or Desktops

  • Apple MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air Models 2013 or later with: Processor: i5 or i7 with at least 4GB memory, 8GB or more recommended for computers to properly update versions of Operating System.
  • Operating System: OS X 10.11 or later, (Older OS X versions will not work with some applications or have compatibility issues).
  • Screen size is to the discretion of the students.
  • Microsoft Office for Mac is Provided free to students (Do not need to purchase separately).
  • Recommended: Purchasing own Anti-Virus program. The University of Redlands no longer provides or requires an AV on computers; however, an AV program is essential for online security.
  • Optional: Apple Care with Accidental Coverage

Chromebooks

  • Hard Drive Storage: 256GB and Higher
  • 8GB Memory and Higher
  • Screen Size: Student’s discretion
  • Microsoft Office Applications available separately in Google Play Store

*Note: Certain limitations on Chromebook computers with application compatibility may not be suitable for students in GIS or advanced video and photo classes.
