A trio of intersectional weekend events will celebrate race, gender, and culture through presentations, discussions, and festivities. All events are free and open to the public.
11th Annual Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Student Conference
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 29 in Orton Center at the University of Redlands
“The Differences Among Us” is the theme of this year’s conference, which celebrates Women’s History Month and will strive to confront how questions of difference between race, class, and sexuality impact women's social movements in the U.S. and globally. Students and faculty will share their work in women, gender, and sexuality studies through art, literature, history, anthropology, and psychology. The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Maylei Blackwell, an associate professor at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and author of “¡Chicana Power! Contested Histories of Feminism in the Chicano Movement.”
University of Redlands Powwow
10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 30 on the Quad at the University of Redlands
U of R Native Student Programs will host a Powwow which seeks to provide a sense of belonging to Native American students and the community. The event will include native foods, arts, and crafts, as well as drum and dance demonstrations from different tribal nations including San Manuel, Pechanga, Morongo, Cahuilla, Serrano, and others. Competitions will include the Headman’s Special and the Hand Drum contest. A Gourd Dance is scheduled at 11 a.m. and Grand Entry, led by the Eagle Staff and followed by flags and dancers, begins at noon.
Race on Campus 4th Annual Conference
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 31 at the Johnston Center Holt Lobby and Larsen Hall
Race on Campus is an intersectional, non-hierarchical, anti-racist student movement that began in 2015. This year’s themes include “Radical Celebration,” “Confluence and Confidence,” “Where is the Blackness?” and “Black and Brown Fems to the Front.” This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required and can be made here: https://www.raceoncampus.org/2019-registration.html
