International collaboration results in new degree program

The Master of Arts in Counseling and Psychotherapy is the first-ever University of Redlands degree designed for students in China

The University of Redlands and Hubei Oriental Insight Mental Health Institute (OI) of Wuhan, China have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate in offering a Master of Arts in Counseling and Psychotherapy.

The program was developed to address demand in China for programs to prepare mental health professionals.

“China has about 135 master’s programs in clinical or counseling psychology, a small fraction of the number of programs we have in the United States, despite a Chinese population that is four times greater,” says Rod Goodyear, professor and chair, U of R’s Department of Counseling and Human Services.

Chinese students selected for the 40-unit program will complete 27 units at OI in China and the remaining units at U of R’s main campus in Redlands. The program implements training best practices and capitalizes on OI’s affiliation with the Clinical and Counseling Psychology Registration System of the Chinese Psychological Society to ensure optimal training placements for the students.

The first cohort is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2019.
